[Brief Review] Ulzix Hong Kong Free Forever NAT VPS Test: Decent Unlocking, but Network and Performance Are Worrying

[Quick Review] Ulzix Hong Kong Forever-Free NAT VPS Review: Good Unlocking, but Network and Performance Raise Concerns

Early Warning: Test results for this machine are quite unusual, with extremely pronounced pros and cons. Please read to the end.

Introduction

Today I’m bringing you a review of Ulzix’s forever-free Hong Kong NAT VPS. Specs: 1 core (E5-2696 v4), 128MB RAM, 128MB swap. Testing script: latest Fusion Monster version. To start with the conclusion: this is a machine with very skewed talents, only suitable for users with specific unlocking needs and who can tolerate poor performance. If you care about network quality and stability, look elsewhere.

Key Highlight: Streaming Unlocking (Biggest Selling Point)

The biggest strength of this machine is its IP unlocking capability, which is outstanding—think of it as a “little unlocking powerhouse”:

  • Full Unlock for HK Region Services: Netflix, Disney+, TVBAnywhere+, Viu.com, TikTok and other Hong Kong local services all show as [Native].
  • International AI Services: ChatGPT (only available via mobile app), Gemini, and MetaAI are all unlocked. But note: Grok, Mistral AI, and Perplexity AI are all blocked or intercepted by WAF.
  • China-Compatible Unlocking: Bilibili Anime, IQiYi, WeTV all show as unlocked for Hong Kong and work well for mainland Chinese users.

Summary: If you need a machine for watching HK Netflix, Disney+, TikTok, and for using some AI services (like Gemini), this IP gets the job done.

Network & Return Route (Biggest Pitfall)

Strong unlocking, but network performance is “catastrophic”:

  • Speed Tests Are Grim: Local Speedtest results: upload only 11.24Mbps, download only 6.36Mbps. Even connecting to Hong Kong nodes, speeds are only 3.11Mbps. Forget about smooth streaming or fast downloads.
  • Serious Return Route Detours:
    • China Telecom: Outbound via CN2 GIA, but return route detours via Frankfurt, Germany, leading to latency over 300ms+, negating CN2’s usual advantage.
    • China Unicom: Direct, but latency still between 250ms–300ms—not great.
    • China Mobile: Outbound via CMI, return detouring with ultra-high latency; some routes approach 400ms.
  • IP Quality: IP type detected as Hosting/Data Center, ASN flagged as “abuse score high,” which means some services may block it. Google Search not possible (NO).

Hardware & Performance (Entry-Level NAT Spec)

  • CPU: Single-core E5 v4 is very weak; Geekbench 5 failed outright, suggesting it can’t even run the benchmark.
  • RAM & IO: Only 128MB RAM, almost none left after installing the OS. Disk IO is bad (only 6034 IOPS for 4K write, 25 IOPS for 1M write): basically a stone-age drive. Don’t run anything heavy—only suitable for lightweight proxy use.

Quick Route Overview for the 3 Main ISPs

  • China Telecom: Local → CN2 GIA → Hong Kong → Detour to Germany → Back to mainland (very high latency)
  • China Unicom: Local → Direct to Hong Kong → Guangzhou Unicom (still high latency)
  • China Mobile: Local → CMI → Hong Kong → International backbone detour (very high latency)

Final Rating & Usage Scenarios

Pros:

  1. Extremely strong unlocking, covers major HK streaming and some AI services.
  2. Outbound for Telecom is via CN2 GIA (but return route bottlenecks).

Cons:

  1. Extremely weak performance (CPU, RAM, and IO are all bare-minimum NAT level).
  2. Network speed is very slow, may be unusable at peak hours.
  3. Severe routing detours on the return trip, poor experience for Telecom/Mobile users.
  4. Google search is blocked, IP purity is average.

Purchase Advice:
This VPS has a very clear target use: it’s not a “server,” but more of a “premium unlocking proxy.” It’s for:

  • Users specifically needing HK region streaming, and who don’t care much about video quality or buffering.
  • Those who need a HK native IP to register or use certain region-locked services.
  • Not suitable for: hosting websites, game acceleration, video conferencing, bulk data transfer, or anywhere low and stable latency is needed.

One-sentence summary: Built for unlocking, at the cost of performance. Be honest with yourself about your needs—don’t be fooled by buzzwords like “Hong Kong CN2”.

Damn, this CN2 is pretty much completely useless now.

How come the results for the same machine’s connection are different each time? Maybe we should test it again. This doesn’t seem right :ac06:

Hahaha

It’s probably because the load was too high, so the upstream traffic was automatically routed to another backbone network.
