Synopsis
The series is adapted from He Yanshan’s novel The Orchid Fragrance Bond.
Shen Jialan, the eldest granddaughter of Grand Secretary Shen, is betrothed to Lin Jinlou, the eldest grandson of the Lin family, whose patriarch is the Minister of Personnel. However, political winds in the imperial court suddenly shift, and Grand Secretary Shen is convicted of treason, resulting in the extermination of the Shen family. To protect themselves, the Lin family breaks off the engagement with the Shen family and instead arranges a marriage alliance with the newly favored Zhao family. Xu Wanquan and his wife, servants of the Lin household whom Jialan’s mother, Madam Cui, had once helped, substitute their daughter Xu Lanxiang, who had recently died of illness, in Jialan’s place. From then on, Jialan assumes Xu Lanxiang’s identity and becomes a third-rank maid in the Lin household. Despite her difficult circumstances, Lanxiang refuses to bow to fate. She continually strives to secure a happy life for herself and her family, resisting all injustice and oppression. In the end, through her kindness and intelligence, Lanxiang breaks free from the constraints of her class, wins Lin Jinlou’s heart, and earns the trust and respect of everyone in the Lin household. She becomes the head of the family, firmly takes control of her own destiny, and clears the Shen family of its unjust charges.
Short review
More than anything else, what touches the heart is the cycle of good and evil, the warmth of human bonds, the meaning of survival, and the unyielding spirit of loyalty. This Lanxiang is simply wonderful.
